Boarded General Slocum with her mother and two siblings Catherine (11) and Walter (9) for an Evangelist Church picnic held at Locust Island (even though the family were half Irish). Later at 10:00 AM the ferry boat is in flames from a careless lit up kerosene lamp in the cargo hold. Most passengers and crew risked drowning in the churning waters at Hell's Gate or being trapped in the burning steamboat. Catherine was the only one to survive. Regina, her mother and older brother all perished.
